Gentel to build an underground fiber optic cable

Gentel announces an ambitious project to build an underground fiber optic cable linking the Republic of Haiti to the three international cable landings already present in the Dominican Republic in order to allow Haiti’s telephone operators to gain access to state of the art connectivity.

Gentel is the Bigio Group’s latest telecom infrastructure project designed to provide Haitian Operators the most reliable and large-scale capacity solution available for their international broadband capacity requirements.

This new system will enable service providers to nationally deploy data network investments without constraint as the bandwidth required to provide end users quality services will finally be available at internationally competitive prices.

Mr. Reuven Bigio, Chief Executive Officer for the Bigio Group, announced that the “company’s commitment is to allow Haitian telecom firms as well as the Haitian people in general access to quality internet at a competitive price.” Mr. Bigio also indicated that “one of the most important things for the Group is to preserve the cable’s neutrality as the only way to ensure there be genuine competition between operators of both mobile and fixed lines in Haiti.” Said neutrality will be ensured with the participation of multilateral cooperating agencies that have pledged their support to the project.

According to the engineering design, the fiber optic cable will be completely underground and have a distance of 350 km. Full service is excepted in the next 12 months.

Gentel intends to use first-rate international technology and knowhow to assure the highest possible service levels are provided to customers and the Haitian consumer in general.

In the reconstruction and development phases of our country, the GB Group, and Gentel are determined to contribute with positive connections!
