On Our Minds – JULY 2011

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS) a massive 7.0 magnitude quake hit Haiti on January 12, 2010 at 4:53 p.m. The quake’s epicenter hit just 10 miles west of Porte-au-Prince and its 2 million inhabitants. Three million people were in immediately need of emergency aid after major earthquake.[i]

Today, almost 18 months after a most devastating natural disaster, the city continues to live amidst dust, ruble and debris. Until Operation Vil Pwòp.

Cleaning-up the city is a top priority and a first step towards getting Haiti back on its feet. “Opération “Vil Pwòp” est en cours” – Vil Pwòp Operation is underway! – boasts President elect Michel Martelly on his Facebook page.

As part of Operation “Vil Pwòp,” the President of the Republic, with complete support and collaboration from the Haiti Recovery Group (HRG) engaged in massive clean-up efforts conducted during the past month and successfully removed significant amounts of  municipal solid waste in Port-au-Prince.[ii]

In all, over seventy (70) bins were distributed throughout the city to facilitate waste collection and proper disposal. Moreover, two hundred and fifty (250) Rollof container pulls equaling 3,827 cubic meters were made available as well as three hundred and fifty five (355) dump truck hauls totaling 5,680 cubic meters.

In the course of one month, Haiti Recovery Group (HRG) was able to remove 9,507 cubic meters of refuse from the streets of Haiti.

This admirable operation ended yesterday July 26th and will soon run in other cities.

Haiti Recovery Group (HRG) is honored to have contributed to this very noble cause and exhorts others to follow in the government’s initiative to start rebuilding Haiti.
